Vodka Tasting Mongolian Style

On Friday night a group of expats got together and did a blind tasting of a few Mongolian vodkas.

We all seem to stick to the same Chinggis (far left). So it was a test to see if there was better.
Opinions differed but it was agreed with any mixers Mongolian vodkas are fantastic.

Drinks were created using a mixture of the vodkas and I must say that was the best!!

Eagle Festival

On Tuesday I went to the Eagle Festival just outside of UB.

The actual festival is held in Bayan-Olgii Province which is in Western Mongolia. The festival celebrates the Kazakhs which is the biggest ethic group in Mongolia.
Events were based on speed, accuracy and agility of the golden eagle. It was amazing to watch... I wish I had taken my bigger camera lens to take better photos.

The eagle hunters bought their eagles some 2000ks by bus and borrowed local horses.
After lunch they did horse wrestling (basically 2 men on horses trying to get the animal hide). This required a lot of skill from the rider, the horse and the crowd!! (the horses would run into the crowd and we had to get out of their way. I ended up hugging a Mongolian man who I had mistaken for my friend.... whoops).
The Eagles are amazing creatures. When they have finished doing their time with the hunters they will be released back into the wild.
Looking down the hill towards the Ger camp and the largest Ger in Mongolia.

Looking towards UB and the smog.

Shopping in UB

Today I went to what was like the Costco of UB... Nomin wholesale. It certainly didn't have the prices or bulk of Costco but certainly had the layout.

It was nice and quiet so it was great to have a wander around and see what they had... from kitchen sinks, tyres, bikes, bread to camping chairs and alcohol.

I learnt that body wash from Germany is better than what comes from Russia. But soap free is an unknown concept.
There is also a law here that alcohol can't be purchased on the first of each month. Which is probably a good thing as I would've come home with lots of bottles of wine.
Cans of soda are sold individually. I was beyond excited to see this pack of 24.
My last purchase of the day! I do not have a green thumb so I will see how long this thing survives!!

Your moving where....? Mongolia!!

In December we left an Australian Summer and arrived in a Mongolian winter.
Ulaanbaatar is the worlds coldest city (we spent a fortune on boots, coats, thermals etc)
Think frozen eyelashes and walking like a penguin over ice.

Above is a photo of our apartment complex. We have external door codes, elevator cards that will only take us to our floor, our door has a unique code (no key) that speaks!! (it only says "it's open, it's closed).
Crossing the roads is an extreme sport. A major road near our place is Olympic and you need to be an Olympian to cross it. Most cars do slow down... it's the ones that swerve towards you that cause concern. There's also an unofficial taxi service in UB, so lots of cars beep their horn as a way of asking if you want a lift.
There's lots of statues around the city. Many of which people don't understand why they are there. The Marco Polo and The Beatles statue for instance.
Scott feeling the cold. He spends more time in the Gobi where it's warmer.
Gardens are full of ice that's been chipped away by hand from the pavement.
Man holes are either loose or open... which makes for another hazard while walking outside.
KFC is making plans to come to UB and this is where it will open 1 of its 4 restaurants. Fast food chains such as Maccas aren't in this part of the world.

Chinggis Statue

A couple of weeks ago we rugged up and headed out of UB to visit the big Chinggis statue.
The air was fresh and clean. The drive was long and bumpy.
The statue is 40m tall and erected in 2008 costing 4.1 million US dollars.

Our group stopped to visit the Eagle Man.
For 3000 T each we could hold an eagle or vulture.

My expression says it all!! The vulture started to climb onto my head and I froze.
