The Old Duck's 80

Today we celebrated my Nan's 80th birthday.
It was the first time in a LONG time that nearly all my cousins had been in the same room (My brother couldn't make it). It was nice to meet family members for the first time and eat cake.

Blogtoberfest - October 26th

I went to school today and I've never been more tired. These kids are doing my head in, the hitting, swearing, name calling and general disobedience - ah.

I haven't been teaching for long but this is by far the worst group of kids I've ever come across. A more effective way of using my time would be banging my head against a wall.

Days like today make me question why I wanted to be a teacher.

I finally did it

I've blogged a lot about my love of Banksias. After lots of sketching with pencils I thought today... sketching with pencils is unlike me!!! So I got out a pen and began drawing. I think this picture reflects my style.

Blogtoberfest - October 25th

The place where I live is a cute little beach shack. I'm sure once upon a time it was bigger, but it was chopped to make way for a bigger house at the back. Our lounge room is the old verandah - long and skinny. We only have one lounge, so I've been looking for floor cushions, here are some that I have found.

Blogtoberfest - October 24th

Being sick has made me have a very relaxing weekend full of movies and sleeping. The bad side is I'm not crashing my youngest cousin's 18th tonight and I miss out on one of my best friends Hens party tomorrow.

The Kirra Surf building near where I live is an interesting shape. When the wind blows it makes a sound like the tornado warning sound in Dallas. This is a photo of it on the left.

Blogtoberfest - October 23rd

I've spent the last 2 days SICK. It wasn't a normal cold for me, sore throat and very swollen glands, usually my sinus' go crazy and I end up at the doctor on antibiotics. I think I picked up some germs from the 7 and 8 years at school.

I spent today reading the latest Frankie magazine

Happy Anniversary to my parents who have been married for 27 years today!!!!!

Blogtoberfest - October 21st

A while ago Redplanet had a "god bless our mobile home" wall plate. I loved it, I looked at it for a while and the day that I was going to buy it.... Folk had already snapped it up. So I've been searching etsy ever since to find something that came close. On Sunday I found this little wall plate. I can't wait to get it and pop it on the wall. I found this plate at Lookonmytreasures.

Blogtoberfest - October 20th

I went brooch crazy on Sunday night. I had to stop myself at 3! They all came from Penorus who has lots of treasures in her etsy shop... 45 pages of goodies. I feel in love with the blue one, it's enamel. I have an enamel brooch from "what's on second" at shop in Birmingham, Alabama. I love, love, love it.

I've spent the day in the classroom so I doubt this blog makes sense. I was told today that I'm a very beautiful teacher, oh what kids will say to go and play outside without a hat.

Blogtoberfest - October 19th

Some photos from my Fingal head walk.

I went back to work today, have a lot of planning to do for tomorrow, think I will do the 3 step lesson plan... meaning I decide the lesson on the last 3 steps into the classroom.

I spent half and hour in the preschool room today - oh they are so cute and small.

Etsy talk - with the Aussie $ being so high I've been getting shipping quotes for items. Some people over charge. I bought a brooch last week, shipping was $4.50 and $1.50 was refunded. I got a quote for shipping another brooch $13. To ship a pound to Australia is approximately $12/$15... I don't think a 1 inch brooch costs $13. I'm going to stop complaining now. I just got a quote for a pendant $15!! ah

Blogtoberfest - October 18th

25 today. Mid Twenties. My facebook status says that I'm refusing to turn 25, I realise I have no control over this. I've legally been able to drink in pubs for 7 years, and so far this weekend I've had no alcohol. Better hurry to the pub and get my free birthday drink.

Here is a photo of the brooches I've been working on. Will get them up on etsy or Made it soonish.

School holidays come to an end tomorrow... back to work I go.

This is the best icecream I've ever had!!!!!!! We visited Maggie Beers Farm in the Barossa Valley last year, that's when I first sampled heaven in a tub. We bought some at the FoodWorks in Tugun on Friday night, I just opened it and it was HEAVEN.

Blogtoberfest - October 15th

Yesterday I went on a National Parks Discovery Walk - A Bush Tucker Yanbala (Walk)

A Minjungbal (local aboriginal tribe) guide took us for a walk around the Fingal Head reserve and lighthouse. It was a fantastic morning, I learnt so much about Fingal head, about plants, the coloured sand (unfortunately 75% of if got mined about 50 years ago). It was such a beautiful area, the ocean was an amazing colour. I think I need to go back with my sketch book and spend a day admiring the view and drawing. I love Australia. A friend I met in America is coming to visit and I can't wait to take her there.

The picture below is amazing, I don't know how the fishermen got there (not connected to the land). Yes freak waves have been known to wash fishermen away.

If you live around south east QLD or Far North NSW check out the website. National parks run lots of activities during the school holidays. This walk cost $8 for 2 hours, well worth it!!!!

I want to go to New Zealand!!!! So it's decided we are going! Where and when is the question. Has anyone been? What was your best experience?

I went all the way to Canberra and all I got were these bowls. And great bowls they are. I instantly fell in love with the colours and then I saw 50% off (woohoo). I paid $25 for 5 bowls and they have been a great purchase.
Now time for some more day dreaming about New Zealand

Blogtoberfest - October 11th

I had the best weekend in Brisbane! It started with a walk to West End. West End was great, we had a drink at a funky cafe. I looked in some cute little art shops like Nook, but I was overwhelmed by everything I couldn't pick anything! We continued walking back to South Bank where the markets were on and watched some buskers.

We went to the QPAC playhouse to see Bangarra an Aboriginal Dance/theatre production. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. There were moments where I had goosebumps, times were I was shocked and an overall feeling of omg these people are talented. I recommend that everyone needs to see it!!!!

I also had a quick look in the Brisbane gallery of modern art. Theres an area in the gallery called the water hall (well so I think). See the photo below (taken from their facebook page (picture is of Dave Graney a true Aussie rocker) around the platfrom is water. There's a few platfroms in the water with large sculpture pieces on them. Anyway ever since my first visit I've always wondered if anyone has ever fallen in! Well on Saturday I saw someone fall in. It was an older lady and I felt so sorry for her.

This afternoon Scott is taking me to see the Bangarra dance group. I've wanted to see it for years.. and today I am!!!
I'm also hoping to visit Nook in Brisbane and buy something special.
Will tell you all about it in tomorrow's blog.

Blogtoberfest - October 9th

It's Friday!! I thought I would show you what I've been working on. A series of drawings based on the cities I've visited.
I started drawing ideas when I was waiting in Sydney last year for my American Visa to be processed. It wasn't until 6 months later that I started putting the ideas I had in Sydney onto paper. Th first drawing was finished.

Seattle - my first trip in America. I wasn't very excited about going. Seattle had never been on my wish list of places to visit. We went for a football game, Notre Dame V Washington. I ended up loving Seattle. The flowers at the Pike Place Markets were stunning, sitting at the water soaking up the sun on Sunday morning is one of my best memories from 2008.

New York, New York. We spent the memorial day long weekend in New York, I wish it had been longer. Central Park was beautiful!!! I heart New York

New Orleans. We drove from Dallas to New Orleans for the Jazz Festival. It will remain one of the best music festivals I've been to.

Dallas, the place where I lived AKA concrete jungle!!! Glad for the experience and starting to really miss the place.

Who knows we may be back some day for a holiday

Blogtoberfest - October 8th

Keeping it simple today. Here are some photos of the beach we live near. We went for a walk down to the water last week. This beach gets a lot of sand pumped into it, which is a shame because it used to be a really good surf beach, now its a beach with too much sand.

It was really nice to sit and watch the waves crash..... until the strong winds came and the sand felt like bullets.
